So August started off with finding out that the project we were doing for work got cancelled, and that I might lose my job. You know, like 2 weeks after moving countries to work for this company. Also my issue with the landlord over the solar panels on the roof became a bigger issue. For these reasons much of this month's blog post will be redacted until the legal cases are settled.

Let's start with the solar panels, my unit has a 6kWh grid connected system installed and going into the lease my understanding was that I had the full benefit of the solar panels. However, after the first night I woke up to a text from my landlord saying I should sign up with this power company PowerEdge. At first it seemed like a suggestion, and I wasn't really interested because I had already gotten a power provider, Octopus Energy, and was content with them.

Then I got an email from the owner of PowerEdge with a contract to sign, and the contract said I would not get credit for the exported power. I replied to the email to confirm that because I thought it was strange. I ignored the offer because why would I give up the exported power credit? I live alone and don't use that much power so I would be exporting a significant amount.

Then this guy from PowerEdge starts accusing me of doing something without my landlord's permission behind his back. And saying that my switch to Octopus Energy was cancelled, and that it was against the terms of my lease. Except I was very certain it wasn't because I read the lease agreement before I signed it and the only mention of electricity was that I was responsible for finding a provider and paying for it. He also kept insisting that the landlord was being very generous by allowing me to use the solar panels at all. Then my landlord started bothering me about it as well, and while he admitted that I have the right to be with whatever power provided I wanted to he really wanted me to sign with PowerEdge.

Now, the story ended up changing several times. It was not clear whether the landlord got the excess power credit, or if the company kept it because apparently PowerEdge paid for the solar panels. At one point the landlord told me that all the solar panels on the roof across 5 units were connected to my inverter and that it was unfair to me. Except I had toured the unit next to mine before I leased and it also had its own inverter in the garage?

Teraz historia zmieniała się kilka razy. The whole situation was a mess, and there were a few times where I was almost convinced to change my mind, but my stubbornness prevailed. After 3 or 4 weeks of this my landlord said he had to schedule an electrician to come and disconnect the solar panels entirely since I won't sign up with PowerEdge.

Leading up to that I had been talking with my co-workers and researching the law myself, to see what my options were here. I didn't want to screw over the landlord cause he seemed like a nice guy, but I also don't want to get screwed over myself. So when the threat of disconnecting my solar panels came up I filed an application to the Tenancy Tribunal. They're the tenancy court in New Zealand and they will actually look into your case for you and do a lot of the leg work based on the evidence and reasoning you provide. I have the hearing scheduled for September 18th, so we'll see what happens.

Anyway, I had ordered curtains from Temu because apparently Kiwis don't like light filtering curtains that aren't white. They finally arrived, and I had to figure out how to put up the one for the window above the staircase, so that my neighbors wouldn't be able to see me walking around my house naked. I didn't have a ladder so I had to do something a little sketchy.

Also at the beginning of the month was the Wolverine Robotics Competition, which Pit Podcast was doing coverage for. It was our first time doing something like this. I had spent 20 hours writing a custom audience display for it and Rainbow Rumble. We had a couple bugs but it was fine, sometimes we just had to switch to official AD. I stayed up late to help get things running because Owen was alone running between the field and the podcast setup on the elevated track. I stayed up till 3:30 and then woke up at 7:00, so I was exhausted. But Brandon made me a nametag, so worth it!

I bought a record player despite being told to not buy things, because I needed something to entertain me. I didn't have a TV or even a speaker to hook it up to so I tried the bluetooth to my headphones (yes this record player has bluetooth). It sounded terrible, I had an airplane adapter for my headphones which I used to tape the RCA cables to the correct terminals on the airplane adapter and it sounded way better!

The same night that I got the vinyl player was when I decided to start writing this blog, I vibe coded the whole thing to automatically load each month as you scroll. Wrote the first month entirely in vscode which was painful. Then I vibe coded a python script to convert .docx to the proper html format. Then later I also made it extract the images, optimize them, and upload them to a GCP bucket. The display of images also was a several hour long battle with ChatGPT because I was not interested in figuring it out with my brain.

Tej samej nocy, kiedy dostałem odtwarzacz płyt winylowych, postanowiłem zacząć pisać tego bloga. Napisałem kod w stylu vibe, aby automatycznie ładował się co miesiąc podczas przewijania. Pierwszy miesiąc napisałem w całości w vscode, co było uciążliwe. Następnie napisałem skrypt w stylu vibe w Pythonie, aby przekonwertować pliki .docx do odpowiedniego formatu HTML. Później sprawiłem, że wyodrębnił obrazy, zoptymalizował je i przesłał do kontenera GCP. Wyświetlanie obrazów również było kilkugodzinną walką z ChatGPT, ponieważ nie byłem zainteresowany rozgryzaniem tego za pomocą mózgu.

Then I bought a TV and soundbar from a website that seems to resell a bunch of retail store returns. The TV was missing the stand, and had a small nick in the polarizer in the top left, so when the screen is black you can see a white dot. Oh well, I got $700 off a $2000 TV.

That weekend we finally went and did some touristy things. We went to Waitekere and did a short 45 minute hike to the reservoir. We could walk right up to the edge of the cliff where the water fell. On the way back home we stopped at Bunning's and I got a peace lily to try and make the house feel more alive.

At some point during this month I matched with a girl on Hinge, I was really excited because she seemed cool. She worked for Auckland Transport in the train control center as a trainer. She was cute too! We talked a bit back and forth but then she stopped responding. I tried texting her a few times but she did not respond any further. These things confuse me, I didn't say anything that would cause her to not like me? The last thing I talked about was explaining that I was a software engineer for a consulting company. Didn't even say anything about how I might be losing my job! What a shame, didn't even give me a chance.

W pewnym momencie tego miesiąca nawiązałem kontakt z dziewczyną na Hinge. Byłem naprawdę podekscytowany, bo wydawała się fajna. Pracowała w Auckland Transport w centrum kontroli pociągów jako trenerka. Była też słodka! Rozmawialiśmy trochę, ale potem przestała odpisywać. Próbowałem do niej kilka razy napisać, ale nie odpisała. Takie rzeczy mnie dezorientują, nie powiedziałem niczego, co mogłoby sprawić, że by mnie nie lubiła? Ostatnią rzeczą, o której wspomniałem, było wyjaśnienie, że jestem inżynierem oprogramowania w firmie konsultingowej. Nawet nie wspomniała o tym, że mogę stracić pracę! The next week, I finally got a TV stand and media console. I also got a coat rack and a shoe bench storage thing. These things significantly improved my feeling of home.

W następnym tygodniu w końcu kupiłem stojak pod telewizor i konsolę multimedialną. Dostałem też wieszak na ubrania i schowek na buty. Te rzeczy znacznie poprawiły moje poczucie domu.

Then it was time to do what I was looking forward to all month, and fly to Perth for the West Australia Robotics Playoff. This time I knew people there before going into it, and we were all sharing a hotel suite. I was bringing along my own air mattress to sleep on. I flew on a 787 with Air New Zealand's new cabin. Unfortunately, the guy I was sitting next to was literally spilling out of his seat and I was uncomfortable the entire time. Like his body was pressed against the arm rests on both sides and spilling out beyond it. Like a muffin spilling out of the wrapper. Great situation to be in for a 7 hour flight.

Jakby jego ciało było wciśnięte w podłokietniki z obu stron i wylewało się poza nie. Jak muffinka wysypująca się z opakowania. Świetna sytuacja na siedmiogodzinny lot.

Then I was picked up at the airport by my friend and we immediately went to the venue. They were struggling with measuring the field markings, and I offered to help but they wanted to wait for someone to go and get a laser level instead. So we all kind of sat around and twiddled our thumbs waiting for this person to get back from Bunning's. I feel like I probably could have measured the field in that time and wouldn't have wasted all that time but oh well.

Their scorpion was interesting, it was all run with Ubiquity network gear. Also they had a custom field perimeter which was a little… interesting. In some ways it was overkill, like 8mm thick plates for the wall legs. In other ways, the tolerances on the parts were all way too tight and a pain to assemble. I spent at least an hour working away at the gates with a dremel to try and get them to be able to close correctly.

I built a reef and then it was 23:00, but for my brain it was 3:00 because of jetlag. I went to the hotel early because I was feeling like a zombie.

The robots were interesting, I found this one that was using some Andymark motor controllers I had never seen, and they were plugged into the DIO ports on the RIO. I had no idea what to even say cause I didn't know what they were trying to do.

A big plus of this event though, we got coupons for items from the food trucks. Any item we wanted was 100% free. Also there was a petting zoo, unfortunately it doesn't seem like I got any pictures of these. Also there was another American there, a referee from PNW. I became good friends with the other people I was sharing the hotel with, we went to the library in the CBD. Saw a kangaroo statue that had its balls very visible.

Dużym plusem tego wydarzenia było to, że dostaliśmy kupony na jedzenie z food trucków. Wszystko, czego chcieliśmy, było w 100% darmowe. Było też mini zoo, niestety nie mam żadnych zdjęć z tego miejsca. Był tam też inny Amerykanin, sędzia z PNW. Zaprzyjaźniłem się z innymi osobami, z którymi dzieliłem hotel, poszliśmy do biblioteki w centrum miasta. Zobaczyłem posąg kangura, którego jądra były bardzo widoczne.

But yeah, then it was time to fly home which I wasn't really looking forward to. While at this event I was ignoring the reality of what was going on at work. On the bright side though, I got upgraded to premium economy on the flight back, and I finally achieved gold status on this flight. Didn't get the new cabin though.

Ale tak, potem nadszedł czas powrotu do domu, na co nie bardzo się cieszyłem. Podczas tego wydarzenia ignorowałem rzeczywistość w pracy. Z drugiej strony, w locie powrotnym dostałem awans do klasy ekonomicznej premium i w końcu osiągnąłem status Gold. Nie dostałem jednak nowej kabiny.

Anyway, the peace lily I got inspired me to get more into gardening so I planted some veggies in the garden. I also got another house plant, this Kalanchoe. However, I was having a problem with the garden outside. All my friendly cats that I love have been using it as a litterbox for the past however many months and that did not bode well with my plants. They kept ripping them up, not to mention the poop and piss probably isn't great for the plants. So I filled the planter with bark chips, and planted a lavender which cats don't like the smell of, and that has mostly solved the issue.

W każdym razie, lilia wodna, którą dostałem, zainspirowała mnie do większego zaangażowania się w ogrodnictwo, więc posadziłem w ogrodzie kilka warzyw. Mam też inną roślinę doniczkową, kalanchoe. Miałem jednak problem z ogrodem na zewnątrz. Wszystkie moje kochane koty, które kocham, używają go jako kuwety od kilku miesięcy, co nie wróżyło dobrze moim roślinom. Ciągle je rozrywały, nie wspominając o tym, że odchody i mocz prawdopodobnie nie służą roślinom. Więc wypełniłem doniczkę wiórami kory i posadziłem lawendę, której zapachu koty nie lubią, i to w dużej mierze rozwiązało problem.

I also got raspberry and blueberry bushes. When I was a kid I would always be the one in charge of our vegetable garden, and I didn't like half the stuff I was growing, which were mostly tomatoes. But I had a raspberry bush, and that was my favorite thing in the whole garden. Unfortunately after a few years it had gotten some disease and died. Now I could have a new raspberry bush, and a blueberry one as well! Maybe I'll end up making some jagodzianki.

Dostałem też krzaki malin i borówek. Kiedy byłem dzieckiem, zawsze byłem odpowiedzialny za nasz ogródek warzywny i nie lubiłem połowy rzeczy, które uprawiałem, a głównie pomidorów. Ale miałem krzak malin i to był mój ulubiony kwiat w całym ogrodzie. Niestety po kilku latach zachorował i uschł. Teraz mogłem mieć nowy krzak malin i borówek! Może w końcu zacznę uprawiać jagodzianki.
